Know what is in each work area
Create a main register and a practical way to identify what is held in vehicles and temporary work areas. The system should be simple enough that workers will keep it current.
Keep labels and SDS accessible
Products must remain identifiable. Decanted substances need suitable labels, and workers must be able to access the relevant SDS without hunting through an office folder.
Secure vehicles and workshops
Consider ventilation, heat, ignition sources, incompatible goods, cylinder restraint, spill containment and public access. A vehicle parked overnight may create different risks from one in active use.
Train for the substances used
Generic induction is not enough on its own. Workers need to understand the hazards, required PPE, storage rules, prohibited mixtures, first aid and spill response for the products they handle.
Check job-site interfaces
Coordinate with the principal contractor or client before bringing substances to site. Confirm storage, emergency arrangements, disposal and any restrictions arising from other contractors’ work.
